The thought of surgery is at best a frightening situation for most people, but at Sumter Regional Hospital patients and their families can be assured that they are in capable hands. While our equipment and physical facility is state of the art, the most important facet of the Surgical Services Department is the staffs commitment to patient care. The people who make up the Surgery Department are dedicated to meeting the needs of the patient by providing care that exceeds the expectations of our customers. Surgery is located on the first floor of the hospital and consists of the Outpatient Surgical Unit (twelve bed), the Operating Room (five general ORs plus three specialized rooms for cystoscopy, endoscopy, and urodynamics procedures) and ten Post Anesthesia Care bays and Central Sterile. The staff is made up of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Perioperative Patient Care Assistants, Perioperative Assistants, Scheduler, and Central Sterile Specialists. The Anesthesia providers include Anesthesiologists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. At the time of the preoperative appointment, the patient receives information from a registered nurse about what to expect throughout the surgical experience. Patients are given an opportunity to ask and have their questions answered. Pain assessment is explained and the patient is encouraged to set a pain goal. Any tests that need to be completed prior to surgery are done at this time. On the day of surgery, the patient is prepared for surgery in the Outpatient Surgery Department. Because of the dedication and commitment of the entire Surgery Team, Sumter Regional Hospitals Outpatient Surgical Department has consistently rated as the benchmark in the state of Georgia in customer service. The patient is then transported from the Outpatient Department to the Operating Room where care is provided by a team of health care professionals including the surgeon, anesthesiologist and/or certified registered nurse anesthetist, registered nurse circulator and scrub nurse. Upon completion of the operation, the patient is taken to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit where they are monitored and cared for by Registered Nurses who are at the bedside. When patients are ready to be dismissed from the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, they are transferred to Outpatient Surgery for discharge or transferred to the surgical floor for further care. More than 300 surgical procedures are performed each month at Sumter Regional Hospital. This includes surgeries from the following specialties: General Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, ENT, OB-GYN, Gastroenterology, Orthopedics, and Podiatry.
