A young 20 years old, Specialist Dustin Harvey has been a national guardsman for two and a half years. A part of Georgia's 48th Brigade, fighting overseas wasn't in his plans. "I'm nervous everyday I roll out, knowing today could be my day." And knowing 17 of his fellow soldiers have died in 3 short months.
Harvey's mother says like many military mothers, she does a lot of praying. "My heart went out to the other families because I know it could've been the other way," Wiffi Harvey says.
None of that, though is on Harvey's mind, as he's back home for 15 days. "don't have to think about fighting, have to worry about getting hurt or injured and just relax." Helping him relax, his new adopted family... The pharmacy from Sumter Regional Hospital. They've gathered phone cards, envelopes, and many other drug store items Harvey might not have overseas.
The 15 people will be writing Harvey letters and sending care packages like this one. A small token of appreciation for a soldiers who's paying a big price. "Come in after 12 hours you see a box sitting on your cot and you're like yeah, i got something...somebody's thinking about me."
Harvey's mother says, "just to have somebody to think about him besides family and it makes me feel good and to know that they care."
