Patient and Community Educational Services are designed to coordinate and provide resources for staff training, patient education, and community education. We provide outside speakers for hospital groups, organizations, and use satellite programming for staff training. This service also provides brochures for patient education in both English and Spanish and patient training tapes. Patient and Community Educational Services handles media services, including recording in-service speakers and programs and live satellite teleconferencing. Patients can watch programs while in the hospital on Channel 5. Staff members can view pertinent educational and training programs on Channel 65. The Education Department also provides training centers for such organizations as the American Heart Association. In order to provide educational programs to the community, Patient and Community Educational Services has an Outreach Program in place. The main purpose of our Outreach Program is to offer community educational resources that improve the health of our community. SRH's community outreach efforts include corporate and community health fairs, and annual health screenings. These events provide opportunities for our community members to focus on the prevention and/or early detection of potential life-threatening diseases. Current offerings include diabetic screenings, prostate exams, colon cancer screening, and mammography for the early detection of breast cancer. Our Educational Services also offers a quarterly, comprehensive smoking cessation clinic, and monthly in-service sessions on wellness topics, grief seminars, diabetic cooking schools, and a host of other programs. The department also offers members of the community the chance to join a wide range of support groups as well as offering CPR training courses when needed. One of the more successful programs the department is involved in is the Youth Apprentice Program (YAP), this allows local students the opportunity to get real-life work experience while still in school.
