Statistical Review of 2001 Cancer Cases
at Sumter Regional Hospital
According
to American Cancer Society about 1,268,100 are expected to
be diagnosed in 2001. Since 1990, approximately 15 million
new cases have been diagnosed. These estimates do not include
carcinoma in situ (non invasive cancer) of any site except
urinary bladder, and do not include basal and squamous cell
cancers. Over 1 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin
cancer are expected to be diagnosed this year. In Georgia,
they estimated 31,100 new cases for 2001.
You can see
that there were a large number of non-analytic cases entered
(Figure 1). The Oncology Clinic opened in 1994, but the registry
did not start until 1996. This resulted in a large number
of class 4 cases (patient diagnosed & first course of
therapy at the reporting facility prior to the reference date.)
During 2001,
the registry at Sumter Regional Hospital accessioned 146 cases
(123 analytic and 23 non-analytic). Of the 146 newly diagnosed
cases there were 87 females and 59 males (Figure 1). As one
ages, the chances of developing cancer increases (Figure 2).
The average age at diagnosis for females is 60-69 years old
and 60-69 years old for males.
The top five
sites for 2001 at Sumter Regional Hospital were breast, prostate,
lung, colon, and bladder as shown in (Figure 3).
