Cardiopulmonary Services
The catch phrase in most hospitals today is "good customer service", and it is no different here at Sumter Regional Hospital. However, good customer service is not something that will appear overnight; it must be nurtured and reinforced on a daily basis. One of the services that demonstrates this commitment is Cardiopulmonary. The entire staff strives to achieve good rapport with their customers.
The main goal of the Cardiopulmonary Services Department is to provide our patients with cardiac diagnostic and respiratory therapy services for both inpatients and outpatients. They work in unison with the physicians and nursing staff in regards to the entire patient population, from the newborns to the senior citizens.
As a result, they have to be flexible because they deal with a wide range of people. In order to give our patients the best possible treatment, the staff has to showcase good customer service skills to help build a trust that will allow them to find out what is wrong and how they can help make them better.
While it would be impossible to list all the services that Cardiopulmonary provides, some of them include: Breathing Treatments, EKGs, EEGs, Pulmonary Function Testing, Bronchoscopes, Ventilator Treatments, Sleep Studies and Thallium Stress Testing just to name a few. They also design specific prevention and treatment options for each individual based on his or her characteristics.
It is no secret that good customer service is a point of emphasis in the Cardiopulmonary area. They discuss the Press Ganey (the company that helps SRH measure customer satisfaction) reports and what they mean to them and the organization as a whole. They also try to recognize the staff members that have been mentioned on the reports by patients and those that have been singled out by coworkers for showing good customer service.

Clinical and Anatomical Laboratories
The Clinical and Anatomical Laboratories serve a major role in helping physicians find out what is wrong with their respective patients. Clinical Laboratory provides a broad range of lab tests both internally and externally.
The Anatomical Laboratory area has a dedicated staff that has more than fifty-five years of service to the hospital. Although many people will avoid pathology because of the general perception, pathology is geared more to saving lives than what happens when a person dies.
For more information about Clinical or Anatomical Laboratories please contact them at (229) 924-6011. |

Community Health Services
In an effort to Promote Healthy Lifestyles in Our Community, Sumter Regional Hospital offers a variety of services designed to improve its customers overall well-being and quality of life. One such program is SRHs Community Health Services, which serves as a linkage and support service for pregnant women and new mothers.
The main emphasis of the Community Health Services Program is to educate mothers on how to properly care for their babies. If we can educate the mother on how to keep herself healthy, she in turn increases her chances of having a healthy baby.
Their local physician, health department or womens clinic refers expectant mothers to the Community Health Services. Eligibility is then determined through the administration of a Presumptive Eligibility Test. Physicians usually know in advance who qualifies so most of the women interviewed are eligible. The application is then sent to the expectant mothers home county Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) and the State department for processing.
Once the expectant mother is deemed eligible, her DFACS caseworker notifies her and then she is referred to the Community Health Services. The expectant mother is then contacted by phone to set up an appointment for a Comprehensive Assessment Test. This test is designed to detect potential problem areas the expectant mother may have, such as nutrition or personal problems that are unrelated to her pregnancy.
As the expectant mother nears her due date, the Community Health Service staff makes monthly check-up calls to make sure the pregnancy is still going well. Six weeks to two months before delivery, two staff members usually make a home visit for a pre-delivery assessment.
If you would like more information on Community Health Services, please call (229) 931-1141. Remember that the staff will assess your needs and if you are deemed eligible for the program, they will find an alternative source for you.

Educational Services
Created in 1995, the SRH Education department serves a vital role in the overall function of the hospital.
The department is designed to coordinate and provide resources for staff training, patient education and community education. It provides outside speakers for hospital groups and organizations and uses satellite programming for staff training. The department also stocks brochures for patient education in both English and Spanish and purchases patient training tapes which are housed in the units needing them.
The Education department also handles media services, including recording in-service speakers and programs and live satellite teleconferencing. Patients can watch the programs while in the hospital on Channel 5, and staff members can also view pertinent programs on Channel 65. The Education department also provides training centers for such organizations as the American Heart Association.
In order to provide ample education to the community, the Education department has an Outreach Program in place for this purpose. The main purpose of the Outreach Program is to offer the community a means of significantly improving the quality of their lives as well as the lives of their families. SRH's outreach efforts include corporate and community health fairs and annual screenings that are offered to the community. These events ensure that local residents focus on the prevention and early detection of potential life-threatening diseases. Current offerings include diabetic screenings, prostate exams and mammography for the early detection of breast cancer.
The department also offers a quarterly, comprehensive smoking cessation clinic, monthly in-service sessions on wellness topics, grief seminars, diabetic cooking schools, and a host of other programs. The department also offers members of the community the chance to join a wide range of support groups that meet on a monthly basis as well as offering CPR training courses when needed. One of the more successful programs the department is involved in is the Youth Apprentice Program (YAP), which allows local students the opportunity to get real-life work experience while still in school.
If you would like more information regarding the Education department, please call (229) 931-1188.

Emergency Medical Services
Thanks to a group of hardworking and dedicated SRH employees, postal office workers aren't the only one that are reliable through any type of situations.
That's because the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics of Sumter Regional Hospital's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are committed to providing quality emergency care to anyone in need.
Their main focus is to provide quality pre-hospital emergency medical care to the citizens and visitors of Americus-Sumter County and other surrounding areas. When people have emergencies and need immediate assistance, it is their duty to make sure they get to them as quickly as possible and be prepared to handle the situation once they arrive.
With an average of 8 years service, the EMS staff is one of the more experienced services at Sumter Regional Hospital. The staff currently consists of nineteen employees; six of which are basic EMTs and the other thirteen are Paramedics.
The difference between EMTs and Paramedics is the level of their training. The EMTs are trained to perform basic emergency medical procedures including IVs and airway control, while Paramedics perform more advanced levels of patient care such as defibrillation, intubations, and drug administration.
Covering the entire area of Sumter County and bordering counties if necessary, the Sumter Regional EMS answers approximately 3,000 calls per year. Employees work two 24-hour shifts a week, and there is an average of 8-10 calls per 24-hour shift, including transfers out of town. There are two EMS crews on-duty at all times. In times of heavy call volume, or during major emergencies, it is not unusual to have a third and fourth crew running EMS calls.
And while most of the public probably thinks that is the extent of what the EMS does, there is much more that goes on that many people don't know about.
EMS is active in the community, and feels an obligation to being involved in a number of different safety related activities. We have a youth education division within EMS that goes out and speaks to kids on such things as bicycle safety, basic first aid, and what EMS is all about. EMS also visits all the local schools and talks with students of all age groups, from pre-kindergartner to high school students.
EMS is also involved in such community events as Red Ribbon Week, Career Day at the local schools, tours of the hospital and some of them also help teach CPR. One of the more important safety related events that they assist on is the Child Safety Seats checks in conjunction with other agencies, because making sure children are safely seated in their vehicles is something we all should be aware of.
The EMS personnel take deep pride in their jobs and the safety of this community is very important to them. That is why utilizing services such as the Worth County based Life Flight (the helicopter service that allows patients to be flown to and from SRH) are vital to this area. For more information, please contact EMS at 931-1142.

Health Information Management Services
Formerly known as Medical Records, Health Information Management (HIM) is upgrading to keep up with the ever changing technology in healthcare and all organizations. And while most of the work force here at Sumter Regional Hospital deals with the customer while they are still physically present at the hospital, this is not the case for HIM.
HIM is divided into three sections; Clerical, Coding and Transcription. The Clerical section is mainly involved in taking care of the administrative duties, such as secretarial duties and birth certificate information. The Coding section provides timely and relevant information, accurate patient billing and provider reimbursement data. When a patient comes into the hospital and is diagnosed or has a procedure performed, our coders enter that information into a computer where text is converted into numerical codes for billing purposes. We then transmit the information to Patient Financial Services. When the physician dictates a report on a patient (history & physical, operative note, consult, discharge summary, radiology), the transcriptionists transcribe the findings to become a permanent part of the medical record.
For more information about your medical record or the Health Information Management Service, please contact us at (229) 931-1397.

Inpatient & Outpatient Surgery
The thought of surgery is at best an intimidating situation for most people, but at Sumter Regional Hospital patients can be assured that they are in capable hands. Surgical Services has all the modern equipment and space of hospitals twice SRH's size. However, the most important facet of the Surgical Services is the staff's commitment to patient care.
We know that surgery is a very intimidating experience, so it is our goal to make the situation as pleasant as possible. Our staff does a good job informing our patients before and after of exactly what is going to happen. |
Operating Room |
|
Surgical Services, which is now housed in the new wing of the hospital, is actually three services in one: Outpatient Surgery, Surgery and Post Anesthesia Care Unit, more commonly known as PACU. After the Outpatient Surgery staff prepares the patients for surgery, the actual procedure takes place in the Surgical area.
On average the OR performs more than 300 surgeries a month, ranging from anything from taking out tonsils to replacing a hip. Consequently, our Surgery staff has to be very versatile and knowledgeable of each respective case.
After a patient is informed that they will have surgery and "prepped" (prepared) for the surgery by the Outpatient staff, they are transported into the surgery area. In the surgical area, where there are four general operating rooms plus three specialized rooms for cysto, endoscopy and urodynamics procedures, a physician or physicians perform the surgery along with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or MDA. In addition to the physician, each patient is assigned a "scrub" nurse and a "circulating" nurse.
The scrub nurse can be a Registered Nurse, LPN, CST or ORT and they are responsible for passing the surgical instruments to the physician. The circulating nurse must be a RN and he or she is responsible for assessing the patient and planning their care while they are in the Operating Room, along with the anesthesia staff.
During the recovery period, the patient is usually asleep and unaware that a group of nurses are monitoring them closely. Most patients stay with us about an hour in the recovery area, depending on their respective procedure. PACU staff connect them to all of their equipment and give their vitals to the anesthesiologists or CRNAs. They also check any wound sites or drainage sites, administer medication for pain and since most are cold after surgery they try to keep them as warm as possible.
The CRNA's and MDA's are involved in every aspect of a patient's surgery, including consulting with the patient and his or her family before and after the surgical procedure. They are responsible for putting the patient to sleep and keeping them as pain-free as possible during the procedure.
Last but not least are the Central Sterile specialists, who are responsible for sterilizing all of our surgical tools. This is a very important step because the OR can't perform any surgeries without clean and sterile equipment.

Nursing Services
The most important part of any hospital is the role played by Nursing Services, and it is no different here at Sumter Regional Hospital. Our customers can rest assured that we offer the very best in technology and machinery, but our biggest asset is our nursing personnel that allows SRH to give that personal touch that everyone longs for.
Here is a brief description of the Nursing Services offered here at the hospital:
Medical Floor
Located on the second floor, 2nd Medical (as it is called) is a 31-bed medical unit, including 9 semi-private rooms and 13 private rooms.
The main goal of the Medical Floor and its staff is to provide quality care to our patients, who are mainly the elderly and those with chronic illnesses such as respiratory disorders, strokes and high blood pressure to name a few. Patients on the Medical Floor can expect an environment that promotes healing through planned management of a patient's condition. This means working both with each patient's physician and family to ensure each patient is getting the best healthcare possible.
On average, more than 650 patients visit the Medical Floor each month and with such a large patient load our nursing staff is ever committed to undying customer service and patient care. Most of the patients assigned to this floor are part of our senior community, which means the staff must be very patient, compassionate and also very understanding. The physical demands can also be great. Our staff assists patients with their bathing, eating and other daily activities we take for granted. This team of healthcare professionals is also equipped to communicate well with the patient's family members because in some cases the patient no longer is able to choose the best medical options for him or herself. Being a good listener is also a bonus as well as being very knowledgeable about their patient's illness.
By administering the highest level of care possible, the nursing staff in turn helps the patient return to a position of self care while also giving them a game plan to deal with recurrent conditions such as sickle cell and high blood pressure.
Surgical Floor
Located on the 3rd floor, 3rd Surgical is a 23 bed surgical unit that consists of 3 semi-private rooms and 17 private rooms.
The purpose of this unit is to provide quality care to children 12 years age and older, adult and geriatric patients who are acutely ill or injured and who are recovering from diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedures. The Surgical Floor average daily census is 18, and at times can serve as an overflow option for the Medical floor.
The main objective for the Nursing staff and hospital personnel on this floor is to provide an environment that promotes healing through planned management of the patient's condition.
Critical Care & Psychiatric Units
The Critical Care Unit (CCU) features twelve state-of-the-art critical care rooms equipped with cardiac and hemo-dynamic monitoring capability. The central nurse station is equipped with computerized monitoring screens from each room. The monitors, reports and stores each patient's heart rate, arrhythmia's, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation.
Currently the CCU is centrally located between the Rehabilitative Medicine, the new Cardiopulmonary Department, and just above the Emergency Room. Close proximity to these vital services affords increased efficiency to the provision of patient care in the CCU.
Visiting hours for the CCU are restricted to immediate family members and are limited to twenty minutes per visit. The visitation times are as follows: 10:00 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., Noon to 12:20 p.m., 2:00 p.m. to 2:20 p.m., 6:00 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 8:20 p.m.
Like the Critical Care unit, the Psychiatric Unit also recently received a facelift. Located on the second floor, the unit has a total of five private (1 bed) and five semi-private (2 beds) rooms as well as two dayrooms, a group therapy room and a patient consultation room. The unit will also features space for three psychiatric offices. A dedicated staff of nurses and other personnel give both patients and their families' piece of mind as they go through this delicate phase of care.
The William R. Anderson, M.D. Pediatric Center
Located on the 3rd floor, the Pediatric Unit is an 11-bed unit whose purpose is to provide quality care to pediatric patients who are acutely ill or who recovering from diagnostic, therapeutic or surgical procedures.
The main objective on this floor is to provide proper equipment to control pain and minimize the patient's discomfort. Children deserve extra care, and our caring staff of health professionals is well equipped to access the needs of their patients as well as their families.
The Pediatric Center was renamed The Dr. William R. Anderson Pediatric Center during a touching ceremony in 2000. Many from Sumter and surrounding counties, friends, family (including his widow, Sharon) and former patients all gathered in the hallways of the pediatric floor to pay tribute to this Sumter County legend.
Dr. Anderson arrived in Americus in 1953, the year the hospital opened. He proceeded to serve the community for almost half a century, and during that time he was instrumental in maintaining the health and wellness of the children of this area. In addition to his long tenure as a member of the Sumter Regional Hospital staff, Dr. Anderson served as Chief of Staff at SRH in 1959 and was the physician for Georgia Southwestern State University's staff and students for 31 years.
Emergency Room
Visitors to Sumter Regional Hospital's new Emergency Room will find state-of-the-art equipment; more rooms and other additions designed to improve their visit to the ER.
The Emergency Room, which is twice as large as it was in its previous location, is accessible by Oglethorpe Avenue and features two entrances. The first entrance is strictly for walk-in patients, while the second entrance is for ambulance patients only. Both entrances feature canopies designed to protect patients and visitors from bad weather.
Once inside the Emergency Room, visitors will have access to a spacious waiting room and the triage area where a nurse checks the patient and determines the type of emergency he or she has.
The Emergency Room now features different rooms for patients with different needs. Four general examination rooms are used primarily for general medical situations, such as backaches, minor procedures (such as light suturing) and other non-emergency ailments. Two trauma rooms are used for major emergencies, such as automobile accidents, potential heart attacks and gunshot wounds. All six rooms can be converted, as needed depending on the situation.
The Emergency Room now also provides rooms for special procedures. One such room is the orthopedic room, which contains special equipment for broken bones, cast setting, etc. There is also a room for infectious disease and isolation room. Another specialized room in the Emergency Room department is the ENT Room, which is used to treat such ailments as earaches, dental problems, throat problems, etc. It also contains special eye equipment as well for those patients who present with complications associated with their eyes.
Finally, two obstetric rooms occupy the department, and are used to handle emergency obstetric deliveries, patients with severe abdominal pains and victims of sexual assault.
To help ease the caseload of the Emergency Room, Sumter Regional Hospital also features the Rural Health Clinic, which is located next to the Emergency Room. Presently, the clinic is open from 4:00 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, Noon to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays and 4:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Mondays. The Rural Health Clinic features three examination rooms and offers the convenience of all the resources of the Emergency Room.
The Sumter Regional Hospital Emergency Room offers all the modern technologies of a larger hospital, complete with an expanded nursing station and new equipment. It is now closer to the surgical suites, which may be critical if a patient needs immediate surgery. The Emergency Room also features a new pneumatic tube system, which sends lab requests to the departments without leaving the ER, thereby allowing the staff more time to spend with the patients.

"Our Birth Place"
OB Nursery |
Officially dedicated on October 27, 1987, Our Birth Place was the first facility in Georgia designed for labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum care all in one room. Although many hospitals now have maternity care facilities decorated in a home-like manner, most allow only labor, delivery and recovery in that one room, moving the new mother to another room for her post-partum care. Our Birth Place allows the mother to go through the entire birth experience in her own room, where she can feel safe and protected, and have access to all the technical and medical support of a traditional delivery room. |
|
More formally known as the Charles Wheatley New Life Center, Our Birth Place was constructed at an initial cost of $3 million and has seen the birth of over 11,000 babies. Its 13 LDRP rooms share space with two dedicated ante-natal rooms, an educational room and a Level II nursery capable of delivering the sometimes complicated medical care some newborns need.
|
Each LDRP room is equipped with a lounge chair for the father and a private bath. At the discretion of the expectant mother and her physician, other family members may be present for the birth.
Here at Our Birth Place, we are ready to make your childbirth experience a memorable and pleasant one. We are Sumter Regional Hospital People and Technology Caring For You!

Patient Financial Services
With more than five different services and forty employees, Sumter Regional Hospital's Patient Financial Services (PFS) is one of the most diverse factions of the hospital. However, even though each service covers a different area of SRH patients' financial situation, the focus is the same for all.
The overall goal of PFS is to gather accurate patient information to facilitate patient care in an efficient manner and to collect all monies owed to the hospital for the services provided. Basically, the patient starts their visit through the Central Scheduling and/or Central Registration areas and concludes with the Cash Management Area.
Here is a brief summary of each service:
Central Scheduling
The Central Scheduling area is responsible for scheduling and pre-registering our patients for diagnostic testing. They receive information from the physicians offices and schedules our patients for laboratory, radiology and/or cardiopulmonary services. Pre-registration is done whenever possible because it allows the patient to bypass the registration area and go directly to the point of services, thereby minimizing delays. On average, Central Scheduling pre-registers more than 475 patients a month. Central Scheduling is open for business Monday through Thursday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm and on Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm and can be reached at (912) 931-1374.
Inpatient, Outpatient and Emergency Registration
If a patient is not pre-registered, their demographic and financial data is then collected by Registration. This information is used for a variety of reasons, including accurate names and addresses for mailing purposes and notification of relatives and/or a physician in case of an emergency. The IP/OP Registration areas are located at the main entrance of the hospital. Emergency patients are registered in the new ER. The IP/OP registration is open Monday through Thursday from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm and on Friday from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. Emergency registration is open seven days a week and twenty-four hours a day.
Insurance Billing/Follow-Up
The Insurance Billing and Follow-up area submits timely and accurate billing to Medicare, Medicaid and all other insurance companies and is also responsible for follow-up with these companies to assure timely and accurate payment is received. Because of the constant changes in the rules and laws, the staff in this area must have constant knowledge of the literature published by the various payers to assure our billing and collection practices are up-to-date.
Financial Counseling
The Financial Counseling area meets with SRH's patients to assist them with meeting their financial obligations to the hospital. Sometimes our patients need help understanding their bill and we are charge of explaining exactly what their obligation to SRH consists of. The staff starts by doing follow-up calls on all balances owed to SRH by its patients. This function is carried out through the mailing of statements, letters and telephone calls. Screening tools are available to assist our patients in qualifying for many of the Federal, State and Local programs that assist patients with limited or no insurance coverage. This service is vital to the hospital's well being, as it is responsible for managing more than 9,000 accounts.
If you would like more information regarding Patient Financial Services, contact us at (912) 931-1389.

Pharmacy
Hospitals throughout the United States and the world depend on their respective pharmacies to provide the medicine and support that their patients need, and it is no different here at Sumter Regional Hospital.
As a matter of fact, the SRH Pharmacy does more than just cater to the needs of the hospital's patients; it also serves the employees as well.
The main role of the pharmacy is to handle the processing of patients' medication from the time it is ordered by the respective physician until the patient is finished receiving it. They order the medication, store it, deliver it and monitor its use as well.
The Pharmacy has a staff of 5 licensed Pharmacists and 10 Pharmacy Technicians who all work together to get the correct medication to SRH's patients. They deliver approximately 43,000 doses of medication and 7,000 IV treatments a month to the floors where the respective nurses administer the medication to the patients.
The SRH Pharmacy not only serves the hospital's inpatient load, but it also functions as a drug store for fellow employees and the hospital's other holdings, such as Ideal Healthcare Center and the Hospice of Americus and Sumter County. This service really serves fellow employees well, because it allows them to pick up their prescription while they are at work instead of driving to a drug store.
